Fading is the damage nobody catches in progress. Then a rug moves, and there's a rectangle of the original colour and a paler version everywhere else. It happened over years, it can't be reversed, and in this valley it happens faster than almost anywhere else in the county.
Four causes, and UV is only the largest
Ultraviolet gets blamed for all of it and is responsible for about two fifths. Visible light adds roughly a quarter, heat roughly another quarter, and what's left comes down to humidity and how stable the dye or finish was to begin with.
That breakdown is how to read film marketing honestly. "Blocks 99% of UV" is entirely true and substantially incomplete — nearly every quality film does it, including completely clear security film. It removes the single biggest cause. Getting at the remaining 60% needs a film that also cuts visible light and infrared heat.
Why heat matters more here
That 25% heat contribution is the part people skip over, and it's the reason fade runs faster in this valley than on the coast. A south or west room here holds elevated temperatures for four months, which accelerates the chemical degradation of finishes, adhesives, and dyes independently of the light hitting them.
The practical consequence is that an infrared-rejecting film often outperforms a clear UV-blocking one on fade protection here, even though both quote the same 99% UV figure. On the coast that distinction matters much less. It's a good example of why a specification that's right in one city is merely adequate in another.
What's most at risk
Some materials give way far sooner than others. Broadly in order of vulnerability:
- Works on paper, photographs, and textiles — watercolours and silk can shift visibly in one season.
- Luxury vinyl plank and laminate flooring, which is in an enormous number of homes here and fades unevenly.
- Natural hardwood, especially cherry, walnut, and anything with an oil finish.
- Soft furnishings and curtains, where the reds and blues drop out first.
- Leather, which dries and fades quickly in a hot, sunlit room.
Luxury vinyl plank deserves a specific mention because it's so common in newer construction here and because its behaviour surprises people — some products can also expand and cup under sustained direct sun, which is a structural problem rather than merely a cosmetic one.
How much film actually helps
A good product stops 99% of the ultraviolet and, depending which you pick, a useful slice of visible light and heat too. Against bare glass that generally buys a two to five times slowdown — the floor that would have turned in four years holds fifteen instead.
It isn't total, and nothing turns a family room into an archive. But the difference between four years and fifteen is the difference between buying that floor once and buying it three times.
Skylights are the worst single offender
Overhead glazing takes the sun at the most direct possible angle and concentrates it on whatever sits below. Given how many homes here have builder skylights in the hallway, kitchen, and primary bath, this is a common and easily missed source of a hard-edged fade stripe tracking across the floor.
